The True Cost of Blogging and Content Creation

Hello friends! Here is the true cost of blogging and content creation. For me ever since I started….way back in 2015. Blogging can be expensive, but it can also be budget-friendly. It’s all up to what you make of it. Here is the general amount I spend in a year, and some of my one-time purchases.

The equipment:

Canon EOS Rebel T7i DSLR: $600

I bought my DSLR in the middle of 2019, so it’s now well over 4 years old. Despite that fact, it still works pretty well. You don’t necessarily need a DSLR camera to run a blog. I know plenty of bloggers who take photos using their phones or even with a point-and-shoot camera. A camera is definitely going to be a HUGE purchase if you want to be a blogger or even a content creator, but you don’t necessarily need one to take decent photos.

Canon G7X Mark II: $700

I also bought my Canon G7X Mark II around the same time I bought my DSLR. The G7X Mark II is THE camera that most content creators on video platforms such as Youtube uses. Although it is very pricey now (it’s now a whopping $1000…oops), it really does the job. I mainly use this to film videos and shoot photos when I’m traveling. I find that bringing my G7X Mark II is easier on my hands and my body when traveling. I also don’t have to lug around a huge camera as well and risk having it stolen. My Canon G7X Mark II is definitely on top when it comes to the the most expensive thing I’ve bought for content creation. However, because I’m passionate about content creating, the cost of blogging and content creation associated with this purchase is worth it.

Total cost: $1300

$1300 seems like a very absurd amount of money to spend on equipment for your blog. However, as I mentioned, you can take your blog photos using only your phone, or use a camera that’s at your disposal.

The subscriptions:

EasyWP Hosting: $12.88/month

The hosting site I use for my blog is EasyWP, a WordPress hosting service offered by Namecheap. EasyWP is one of the cheaper hosting services I’ve tried. They offer really good customer service, which is what I need. I also love how they take care of their staff, which is why I recommend them to everyone who wants to start a blog. Namecheap has over 1000 support employees located in Ukraine. Most of their support staff are located in Kharkiv, which unfortunately suffered a major attack during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. To protest the war, Namecheap terminated use to their Russian users. Politics aside, I really love Namecheap for providing a cheaper hosting service for my blog.

Canva: $12.99/month

Another subscription service I use to create content is Canva. Canva is affordable when you factor in the total cost of blogging and content creation. At only $13/month (about), it’s one of the cheapest things I pay for when it comes to blogging and content creation. I use it to make pins for my blog, thumbnails for any Youtube videos I may make, and even the occasional Instagram graphic.

Lightroom: $9.99/month

Lightroom is such a lifesaver for content creators. You can edit both photos and videos, and I find that pretty awesome. Lightroom is part of Adobe’s Photography plan, which also includes Photoshop, all for $9.99/month.

Plann- $14.99/month

Plann is a social media scheduling app that I use to help post mainly to my Instagram and Facebook pages. It can be very tough for me to remember to post on those platforms often, so I use Plann to help me stay on track. There are other social media schedulers out there, but Plann is what works best for me. I can schedule posts on LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Tiktok, and even Facebook.

Total cost: $50.85

$50.85 doesn’t seem like a lot of money for the cost of blogging and content creation. To be honest, the only subscriptions I have are only for blogging and content creation purposes anyway, so I save a lot of money by not buying anything else, really.

Photo props

I don’t really put a price on photo props, because they all vary in price. I’ve used items I already have as photo props, but I’ve also purchased home decor items to use as photo props. Same goes for fake flowers, notebooks, and whatnot. You don’t necessarily need photo props, especially if your photos have a minimalistic vibe. However, I like using photo props in my Instagram photos and my blog photos. I find that using photo props just adds that little bit of spice that my photos need.
