oura ring

Hello friends! Here is my review of the Oura ring! I’ve had my Oura ring since December, and I’ve been very impressed with it so far. I mainly use my Oura ring to track sleep and activity, but you can use it for so much more.

What is Oura?

Oura is a Finnish health company, famous for the Oura rings. The rings can track almost everything. It can track your sleep, activity, health, and even your period (via their partnership with Natural Cycles). It also track your heart rate and heart rate variation.

How it works

The Oura ring scans your body’s biometric data through Bluetooth. There are sensors located at the bottom of the ring. The ring captures your body’s data faster than a Fitbit and an Apple Watch could, which is very good. It is also supposedly accurate, although the older rings are not as accurate as their newer counterparts.

What ring I own

The ring comes in two designs: Heritage and Horizon. I have the Heritage ring in Silver, which has a flat top. I actually prefer the Heritage style as it’s very easy to tell whether you have the ring on the right way. The Horizon ring is round all the way through and it can be difficult to tell if you have the ring on the right way.

What it records

The ring tracks my sleep, which is shown above. The factors it tracks when it comes to sleep are:

  • Total sleep- how long you were asleep
Efficiency- overall sleep quality, starts after you go to bed
  • Restfulness- how soundly you slept during the night
  • REM Sleep
  • Deep sleep
  • Latency- how long it takes you to fall asleep
  • Timing- compares sleep time with your circadian rhythm

The ring also tracks your heart rate variability (HRV). Heart rate variability is the change between your highest heart rate and your lowest heart rate during sleep.

Readiness is a holistic view of your overall health. There are several factors that comprise your readiness:

  • Resting heart rate
  • HRV balance
  • Body temperature
  • Recovery index
  • Sleep
  • Sleep regularity
  • Previous day activity
  • Activity balance

I’ve had my HRV balance be off kilter for a while. Whether that’s due to another chronic disease I have or other factors, the Oura ring allows me to see what areas I need to improve.

Finally, the Activity tab of the ring shows what activity you did. Here are the things that the ring records in the activity tab:

  • Stay active
  • Move every hour
  • Meet daily goals
  • Training frequency
  • Training volume
  • Recovery time

Personally, I don’t use the ring to track my activity. This is because of several physical factors, such as mental health, but also because of chronic illness. When I have migraines, it makes it harder for me to be physical because of how much pain I’m in.

Do I Recommend the Oura ring?

The short answer is: yes, if you want a subtle wearable to track your sleep and steps. However, a good old fashioned Fitbit or even an Apple Watch works just as well. The ring tends to track sleep more accurately than your Fitbit and Apple Watch. It is comfortable to wear to bed. I’d also recommend it if you want to track your sleep, but hate how bulky the Apple Watch feels. It costs the same as one, so might as well get something that can track more accurately and is comfortable to wear.

  1. It’s amazing how the tech has evolved to be able to have all this in something so small. It makes it quite literally at our fingertips, and it could really be beneficial for those who need to track all this. Amazing!
