Hello friends! GeoGuessr is a game that I’ve been playing for a long time in various forms. My first exposure to a GeoGuessr-like game was in 2013, when I played a game where you had to guess where you were within 5 moves. My love for the game grew until I finally joined the GeoGuessr community in early 2022, a month after I moved back home.
What is GeoGuessr?
GeoGuessr is a game that utilizes Google Maps’ API. You are put in a random spot in the world (where there is Google Car coverage) and you have to guess where you are. It’s a bit tough at first, and of course Googling is not allowed, but the more you play, the better you get.
There are multiple game modes in GeoGuessr. You can play classic maps, where you play by yourself, and then there are duels, where you face other players, and even a little airport game, where you have to travel around the world in as little stops as possible. They also used to have a Candy Crush game mode, but that has since been taken off the app.
Geoguessr has become so popular, that there is now an eSports scene starting to form around it. People who are extremely good at the game (“pros”) compete at the Geoguessr World Cup, which took place in Stockholm, Sweden for the past two years (2023 and 2024). This year, in 2025, they are hosting the World Cup in Copenhagen, Denmark instead.
Why do I love the game so much?
I love the game so much because it introduced me to a lot of new friends (I have terrible social skills because I’m autistic), and I love how judgment-free it is. Nobody judged me for being neurodivergent; in fact, the opposite happened. It was a huge surprise simply because of how used to rejection I am.
GeoGuessr also is the reason why I love travel. To be fair, I enjoy clicking around Google Maps every now and again just to see what cool places have coverage, but after playing this game for a while, it’s led to a newfound love of travel. I want to see all those things in the game with my own eyes. I want to experience different cultures because despite the game showing you only one image sometimes, it’s so fun to click around and explore and see what different parts of the world look like, and what their culture is like as well.
Recently, GeoGuessr had their official World Cup last year, and they held it again this year in Stockholm. I would love to go and meet all my GeoGuessr friends for the first time.
Overall, GeoGuessr has been an important part of my life for the past 2 years, and it’s led to incredible opportunities. I now make a bit of GeoGuessr content (mainly playing maps and recording myself dueling while talking about my life) and I stream it sometimes as well (mainly duels now, but previously, I used to play Chatguessr, which is a way for a streamer to play GeoGuessr with their chat).
Have you ever heard of GeoGuessr?
